The items you should not clean too often

1. Ceiling fans and lights

Ceiling mounted lighting fixtures and ceiling fans only need to be cleaned once a month. Schedule cleaning in different rooms for each week. Remember to clean overhead fixtures first, so that dirt will fall to the ground. Daily cleaning of electrical appliances and lights can also affect how often and how long they operate.

2. Winter coat

Want to save on dry cleaning bills? Most winter coats can be worn all season with just a few washes. The key to staying away from routine laundry is spotting stains as early as possible. Hang your coat properly after each wear and use a good clothes brush to remove dust and lint.

3. Bed sheets, blankets and comforters

Bed sheets are tricky to clean because of their size. So you don't have to wash them daily or weekly. Instead, clean them at the end of each month. If you don't have a large front-loading washing machine, take these items to the laundromat. If you have small children or pets in your bed, using a waterproof sheet and replacing them regularly will help keep your bed area clean all winter.

4. Curtains and blinds

Curtains or drapes in living areas and bedrooms do not need to be cleaned as often. Just a thorough cleaning by dry cleaning once a year should suffice. If you're worried about dust, take the blinds down and put them in the dryer to remove dust and even a few wrinkles. Do not use heat as that may cause some fabrics to shrink. However, curtains in the kitchen and bathroom should be washed more often as they can be contaminated with too much grease or bath products.

5. Carpets and upholstered furniture

Carpets and upholstered furniture should be professionally cleaned only once a year using steam and specialized cleaning products. However, this is no reason to skip vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture at least once a week. Vacuuming regularly helps prevent dirt from sticking to the fibers of the fabric. If you regularly clean, you can actually do more harm. Using too much detergent and over-wetting can weaken the carpet base and cause mold growth in carpet cushions and upholstery.

6. Furniture with glass or fabric upholstery

For dining chairs, you can cover them with a fabric trim to give them a new look. On the tabletop, instead of a wooden table top, many families will design an extra glass top to make the table look more beautiful and brighter, and also easier to clean.

It's really not necessary when you put the fabric in the wash every day or every day you lift the glass off the table to clean the surface under the glass. You can just keep it up to once a month instead of cleaning them up too often.

7. Bathroom toys

Children need a daily bath, but bath toys can take a little longer than a thorough cleaning. If you wash the toys in clean water and hang them to dry in a mesh bag, a thorough cleaning only needs to be done once a month.

Simply mix 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar with a little warm water. Put the toys in and soak for about 15 minutes. Use a clean sponge or cloth to wipe the surface of the toy, rinse with clean water and allow to air dry.

8. Bed pillow

Bed sheets and pillowcases need to be washed weekly as they come into direct contact with the skin on our bodies. But the nightstand only needs to be washed every three to six months. Washing them more often will cause them to wear out quickly. Almost all bed pillows (feather, polyester, or foam) are home washable. Just make sure there is enough time for the pillow to dry completely before going to bed!

9. Oven

Cleaning the oven doesn't have to be on your weekly household chore list. If you clean up spills as soon as they happen, you can clean your oven just two or three times a year. You should choose the right time to clean them thoroughly instead of waiting until the end of the year.

10. Kitchen cabinets

The refrigerator is where raw and cooked foods go bad quickly, so it's a good idea to clean your fridge weekly. But the cupboard for dishes or dry goods, you don't need to clean with that frequency. Just clean it once or twice a year. Set the dishes and dry goods aside, then clean the shelves. Check for and remove any insect activity and check expiration dates before you sort and arrange them in your kitchen cabinets.
